THE DOMINION POST WELLINGTON GOLD AWARD

The first ever Supreme award winners, back in 1999, were Te Papa and Saturn Communications Ltd. The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa continues to thrive, weighing in at 64,000 tonnes and attracting over 12 million visitors since opening in 1998. After its start on the Kapiti Coast, Saturn spread to Wellington and, after joining up with Australian company Telstra and then Clear Communications became TelstraClear. World domination is looking good as the company continues to run fibre optic cables all over the country and expand its three-pronged broadband, cable television and telephone services.

Wallaceville Animal Research Centre was 1999's Discovering Gold winner. Now called AgResearch Wallaceville, it's part of New Zealand's largest CRI. Current research includes molecular biology, immunology, parasitology and reproductive technologies, with a huge emphasis on hand washing before and after tea breaks. Sadly the 1999 Generating Gold winner, South Pacific Tyres, closed it's Upper Hutt operation and 2000's Creative Gold and Supreme Award winner Cloud 9 now has its main base in Queensland.
In the lengthy list of Gold award winners, several names stand out - and not just because they're longer than the others.
Sidhe Interactive for example... Sidhe is pronounced shee and refers to a race of Celtic superbeings, while Interactive is pronounced as it's spelt and everyone knows what it means. These boys must win the record as Most Persistant Goldies. A Finalist in 2000 Cyber Gold, they changed horses to win Creative Gold the following year. Still not satisfied they picked up both the Cyber and Supreme Awards in 2004.
The icing on a very large cake for Sidhe, a serious game development studio with links to Microsoft, Sony and a whole heap of other software manufacturers. Sidhe encourages up-and-coming game developers, not only by offering them gainful employment but also by offering scholarships for media design students.
Icebreaker New Zealand was 2001's joint-winner in Emerging Gold. In 2006 they won Global Gold and the Supreme Award. Jeremy Moon also picked up an individual Award in the Absolutely Creatively Wellington Ambassador Award in 2005.
Icebreaker has been doing very well living off the sheep's back. Merino sheep to be precise - Icebreaker's boss wanted to prove that clothing made from natural wool was a very viable option. It's all about layers apparently, and we're not talking chickens - the merino has under-, mid- and outer-layers of wool designed to keep it cool in summer and toasty warm in winter. If it worked for sheep in the snow, Jeremy reasoned, it'd work for people. It did, and it does, spectacularly so.
