ASPIRING WALLS

Wellness Rollout

The only wallpaper manufacturer in the Southern hemisphere, Aspiring Walls has been rolling out wall coverings for nearly sixty years. In a busy factory environment, safety is on everyone’s mind.

“We’ve got a healthy H&S culture here,” manufacturing manager Neil MacDonald (pictured) says.

“Staff members are always looking at ways of making jobs and processes safer.” And looking out for each other – the company has recently introduced an “Are you okay?” programme aimed at mental wellness.

Neil says there hasn’t been a serious accident on-site in over a decade. “And currently we have gone 1460 days without a lost-time incident.”

METCO ENGINEERING

Machine Safety Matches

Metco Engineering works wonders with metal – welding, milling, cutting and milling it.  The work can be hot and heavy, like some of the machinery. Keeping everyone safe is paramount.

The company has developed a skill matrix that lists all staff and their competencies on every machine. So nobody works on a machine unless they’re fully trained on it,” owner Paul Jessup (pictured) says. “And that’s everything from welders to laser-cutters – even printers.”

In the last 12 months, there have been no major lost-time incidents, but that’s not the biggest payoff. “It’s peace of mind,” Paul says. “Knowing nobody’s being put at risk – that’s what’s important.”

WASTE MANAGEMENT

Nice Road Truckers

Waste Management NZ is New Zealand’s leading resource recovery, recycling and waste services provider. With approximately 1700 team members, the company is driven by a focus on safety, sustainability and service.

“We’ve identified collisions as our number 1 critical risk,” National HSE Manager Guy Smith (pictured) says. “We helped initiate the Share the Road initiative, which aims to inspire behavioural change amongst drivers and cyclists. Already there’s been a cultural shift within the company.”

150 WMNZ drivers throughout New Zealand have participated in Share the Road workshops. Over 75% of those surveyed agreed the workshop had made them much more aware of cyclists.
