Dr GRORDBORTS INVADERS by Weta Workshop

Hi Spek Spex

Dr. Grordbort and his retro sci-fi universe is the brainchild of Weta Workshop’s Game Director, Greg Broadmore (pictured)

After seven years of hard work behind locked doors, the universe is now available as Dr. Grordbort’s Invaders through the wearable device, Magic Leap One.

It was a challenge, Greg states, “We were working within a whole new medium, and one that doesn’t come with a manual.

But the future of storytelling is about pushing the limits of technology to create a new universe of human experiences and add magic to the everyday. And Weta Workshop is just getting started.”

WAIRARAPA TIMES-AGE

Local Stimulant

Locally owned, locally printed, the Wairarapa Times-Age is independent and fiercely local.

The first daily in New Zealand to move from afternoon broadsheet to a morning compact, the Times-Age moved back into local hands in 2016 when publisher Andrew Denholm (pictured with next gen newsman Riley Denholm) bought the paper.

“The readers and local business have been incredibly supportive,” he says. “Probably because the front section is entirely local, and opinion and sports pages are also biased that way.”

In the latest ABC audit, the Times-Age was the best performing daily newspaper with a circulation over 5,000 in the country. “And that’s against a backdrop of double digit declines amongst many of our peers,” Andrew says.

WELLINGTON PARANORMAL

Casting Shadows

Wellington Paranormal is the first foray into TV by the NZ Documentary Board – also the fictional “producers”* of What We Do In The Shadows – and is almost a police reality show, but with supernatural storylines and deadpan Kiwi humour.

“Think Police Ten/7 meets The X-Files,” producer Paul Yates (pictured) says. “Aliens, zombies, droll police officers – it’s ideally suited to its Wellington location.”

The first series began screening on TV2 in July last year and was a hit - the first episode reached an audience of 484,400, unheard of for a first-run Kiwi comedy. A second series was commissioned straight away.

* Paul tell us that NZ Documentary Board was just a joke graphic at the start of the film to make it sound official. Jemaine and Taika decided to adopt it for the TV version
